So much is wrong when people claim this is result of more efficiency, cheaper goods by big stores: 1) consumers are pauperized/must buy on credit because of stagnant real wages = forced to buy cheaper; 2) big stores drive small out of biz through cronyism/regulation/cartelism...
In "protectionist" Japan because of laws protecting small business from large stores you get much more of a "capitalist" feel walking city; many small businesses catering to variety of tastes. By contrast American cities by now have a centralized/depot/Soviet feel...
Japan owes money to its own citizens; America owes Japan what, $2 trillion? America owes money to foreigners, that's much less sustainable. Also overstated: lack of "growth" in Japan. What is significance? America has decreasing life expectancy, Japan has longest in world
If they didn’t have a nest egg of about $4 trillion in international assets that they can draw from, they would’ve collapsed long ago. Anyway, the point is that neither system is perfect and we need to come up with something that allows for true economic freedom.
