I second Tacitus...not much read today, and according to many (like Nietzsche) was best historian. Plutarch + Tacitus is very good reading. Suetonius is amusing

not really...even the online versions are OK I guess. Older translations are less PC but sometimes have problems too. Plutarch's Lives was very important to education of American elite in 1700's, all the founders grew up on it

True thred and not. This thred implies the extended fambly would act as a collection of servants, cooks and at best companions for the young nuclear "couple." It forgets the problems, and the hierarchy of traditional societies: grandmother in China, Sicily rules with iron fist
Missing from nearly all discussions of “why aren’t millennials having babies” is the fact that the thick, local, extended family—which *drastically* reduces the financial and emotional cost of having children—has almost completely collapsed in the West, particularly among whites.
