there are many rum drinks that you don't need that for...I like dark n stormy with Gosling's rum, used to be my favorite

you can, but is hard even in hipster cities. Any rhum agricole works. I think Clement is somewhat more common. Barbancourt from Haiti is also the same style, and the white rum is similar in price to Bacardi, but isn't as good imo
