Hazony won't go anywhere near the substance of nationalism, in which it makes no sense to identify simply "tradition" with religion. In our time the social and religious conservatives have long been active, and completely useless; have had no role in new nationalist awakening...

Japan is a secular country; various factions and groups in Japan have embraced various religions, but overall it's secular and polytheistic/eclectic. Japanese solution would address 100% ...110% you could say...of ALL demands the peoples of the West are now making

The example of Japan, and many other similar examples from the West, including the collaboration of churches with migrant NGO's shows that in practice the problem of "religion" as such has zero to do with what's in play in the rise of right nationalism. Not in practice anyway...

In theory Hazony (and the Straussian/Catholic academics and campus debate he's trying to cast himself into) are also wrong, and to be blunt, completely unqualified to discuss nationalism. They never read a page of Fichte or Giovanni Gentile...these are "forbidden" to them

As such Hazony & co. are unable to understand or at least discuss that "particular" "traditions" and nationalism can oppose "universal reason" in the liberal sense in ways other than appeal to faith or religion; the Japanese don't have to be devout Shintoists to know who they are

Article says absurd things on "white identity"; trying to scare liberals that if they allow reason as foundation of political life, weird "Darwinian" scientific racism may be chosen instead of their own egalitarianism. He's arrogant or stupid to think this will convince them

Hazony's (willful?) ignorance on "white identity" is very revealing. White identity didn't develop recently as a result of scientific racism or the Enlightenment. It's a natural consequence of European colonialism. European colonists were called "white" by the natives and slaves

If you were a settler in what is now Tennessee the natives would hunt you for trespass; they didn't give af if you were Slovak or Scotch-Irish, you were the "white man," and were hated by them and similarly by slaves...this has nothing to do with Darwinian scientific racism

Whiteness or "white identity" is an inclusive and imperial identity that developed in all European colonies from Dutch East Indies to Africa to the Americas. it's a historical result of European imperialism, which presents a special problem in theory and practice for Hazony & co.

I will discuss this elsewhere at length--not because of Hazony, who's a cipher--but because it will help those on our side too understand meaning of "whiteness" problem. Hazony is deeply hostile to Rome; he sees "particular nationalist" Israel in opposition to "universalist" Rome

Romanity or the Hellenistic project, however, is meaning of the West and it is "Who We Are." Christianity is only a branch of it. Romanity, or the imperial identity of the West (and of Russia) in various forms is at bottom not distinguishable from "white identity"...
