genetic studies show that's probably not the case...ancestry for Ashk is mostly Near Eastern and European (specifically north Italian, 50%+)

Dressed like regular Russians, I can't tell apart the Erzya people (forest Finns - Mordvins) from normal Russkies...can you? I think Putin's mom is also some kind of Finn (Karelian)

not sure about this, afaik no ...and I don't think they cared to, as it was for political reasons; technically conversion is allowed, and I think rabbis were willing to look the other way as now had a powerful state on their side

Phenotypic diversity only exists in the native peoples of Europe. Everywhere else there is monotonous tribal uniformity, only in the peninsula jutting out of west of world island is there diversity in skin tone, hair color, hair texture. Has significance for sculpture & painting

Imagine ancient Greek sculptors trying to depict boring uniform hair of tribes outside Europe...only Europe allows for this diversity of hair styles/textures.

I believe that despite being weakened by the Rus, the Khazar kings were still around when the Mongols invaded

What do you mean about the Cumans? They were a Turkic-speaking people but described by contemporaries as blond/blue eyed. Not sure there's much info on the Magyars or Bulgars in terms of looks though

Interesting... there was powerful Medieval Jewish kingdom with a redheaded, blueyed horse-riding steppe warrior elite that claimed descent from twins reared by a she-wolf (see founding myth of Ashina clan)...not quite what you'd expect!

On the other hand the claim promoted in part by Arthur Koestler and others that modern Jews descend mostly from Khazars isn't borne out by genetic studies. Redheaded Ashkenazi Jews are not uncommon but as Schopenhauer points out, red hair isn't all that uncommon in Middle East

Khazars described by contemporary neighbors as redheaded and blue-eyed, just like Udmurt today. People imagine gingers are purely Irish thing ("Celtic" difficult meaning), but not true. Before Mongols possibly much of the steppe had a lot more phenotypic diversity...

When Mongols invaded Khazaria they wrapped kings in carpets and trampled them, or maybe boiled them alive, because of taboo against the spilling the blood of the wolf, and Khazar kings descended from Ashina "wolf" clan. Some Georgian nobles also claim descent from Khazar king.

that's misleading, is the survey done on country-wide level? Means nothing. The Udmurt ethnic group would have to be considered on its own. Same with height: men from Dalmatian alps are the tallest in the world, but rarely are studies done by natural area or natural group
