A similar tactic is no doubt being used on the right. Versions of the "altright" have existed before 2016, percolating for years. Nobody did much because it wasn't important. Now they see the immense gains made not only in USA but also Europe, so they are mounting attacks

It sounds like in every generation there are direct or indirect govt/political police influence ops to target Catholics and use them to modulate the messaging on the right...or more specifically to pick unstable/narcissistic individuals as spokesmen and play divide & conquer
The marriage of Catholicism to laissez faire capitalism was a neocon construct to put the Faith at the service of worldly ends.
It is dying off with the boomers and holds little sway among younger Catholics.
